IPL is one of the the biggest cricket tournaments in the world it is played in India every year starting from 2008. More than 1100 matches have been played so far. This post tries to answer this question that, among the two teams played in a match which team won more times?

Wins and losses over years of IPL
We have analyzed the data from 2008 to 2025 and made infograph for each year. The wins and losses of the toss winning team that bowls in the first innings are shown for the year 2009, 2015,and 2023.
The video below contains the infographs for all the years. The wins are marked by green circles and the losses are marked by red circles. In the video, first the results are shown in the order of match date later they regrouped into wins and losses for ease of comparison. This is done for all these years right from 2008 to 2025 as you can see sometimes the wins and losses are close to each other, sometimes the wins are more than the losses and in few cases the losses are more than wins.

Comparison of wins and losses in bar chart format
The same data is shown as a bar chart where wins and losses are stacked.
This bar chart compares the number of wins and losses in each year. As you can see the number of wins is more than the number of losses.
Here the wins and losses are shown as percentage. In the year 2016, the wins is nearly 60%. The lowest percentage of wins is in 2015 which is close to 40%.
When we compare the total number of wins and losses we can clearly see that the team that bowls in the first innings wins nearly 20% more.
In another view irrespective of the decision to bat or bowl,the comparison of wins and losses for the toss winner shows that the wins and losses are almost same for the toss winner.
Conclusions
The last two charts show that the team that bowls in the first innings has more wins. To answer the first question of which team wins more times ? After seeing all the chart data the team that bowls in the first innings won more times. In these cases the team that loses the toss also wins if they bows in the first innings. So to increase the chance of winning, the team has to bowl in the first innings. To get to that they need to win the toss. We have found that the team that bowls in the first innings won more times than the times it lost the match. The same data is used to check how the toss winning team won the match. The analysis shows that the wins and losses for the team that wins the toss is almost equal.
Hence it is important to field in the first innings to increase the chance of winning the ipl match. To get to that the team needs to win the toss. This stresses the importance of winning the toss in ipl match.
