Solution to Medium chess puzzle 0011

At this puzzle, next move is by White. The objective of the puzzle is to avoid checkmate in one move. If you observe carefully, the black bishop will move some where and the movement will result in a discovered check. If the bishop moves to b3 or f3, the bishop will also give a check. This kind of check is called double discovered check. In the present situation, you have to move your king. You can not move in c or d file since they are attacked by opponents rook and queen respectively. You can not move to e file either since it is attacked by their knight.

You have three options to avoid the checkmate.

1. Capture the queen. This is possible by giving a check to their king by moving your knight to b6 which is called Knight Fork.
2. Block the rook’s access to the c file. You can move your bishop to c3.
3. Block the queen’s access to the d file. This can be done by moving your bishop to d2.
4. In both the cases of bishop’s movement, you will have a free square (e1) for your king to move.
