At this puzzle, next move is by Black. The objective of the puzzle is to gain a piece. The white bishop at c4 supports the rook at d5. If you capture the bishop using your rook at c file, the white rook becomes unsupported. Your rook may be captured by the knight. However, you can capture the unsupported rook using your rook at fifth rank. This process of removing the supporting or guarding piece is called undermining.
